Last year, we became acquainted with Brenden Ernestine, a passionate jeweler, small business owner, and creator of astonishing masterpieces out of natural materials. Together with his partner, he wanted to start this e-commerce business almost four years ago, but obstacles always appeared.
“When I first began this business, I thought that I was ready for that big step, but it turned out I was too optimistic (laughs).”
Brenden’s experience began with gifting hand-made rings to friends and the family next door and resulted with selling on global e-commerce platforms, such as eBay, Amazon, and Etsy. After many ups and downs, Synder, as he said, became his well-cut diamond.

The first sales channel that caught Brenden’s eye was Etsy. The customization was really nice, as Brenden put it, but at some point, there were no new customers. So he started to research other platforms to create the second store.
Once Brenden decided that the Amazon store was the best choice for him, that was also the crucial moment when he realized that accounting was actually time-consuming, particularly with two online stores, and was causing him stress. Especially when he couldn’t see the details of his cash flow during a particular period.
“The first argument with my partner became a red flag. During that time, I couldn’t sleep properly because of the amount of bookkeeping work that had to be done. My mom was sure that this e-commerce business was just a dead end and would only leave me without a cent. Guess I got my stubbornness from my father (laughs)”.
The main challenge for Brenden appeared to be Amazon fees, particularly the tracking of them. He had multiple expenses for different types of fees, but he had to manually categorize everything in his accounting platform (QuickBooks in this case).
“I’ve spent a lot of time and money but I couldn’t even understand what on. There was no categorization, and some expenses showed up as “Advertising,” and all the rest appeared as “Amazon Service Fee”. I wanted to see specific numbers to keep track of how much I needed to spend on this or that Amazon service”.
And that’s how Brenden found out about Synder!
After the months of QuickBooks work, Brenden was eager to find consolidated accounting software that helped to solve his problem.
“Excel sheets are great, I tell you that much, but not at the time when you need to record more than 2000 transactions per month or want to have your own life aside from business. Of course, I have had to spend some time to figure out the workflow of Smart Rules and to edit them to my advantage, but that is still worth it! I needed to do this just once, and after that, everything was recorded automatically. The funny thing is that now I won’t even remember how to do all these categorizations manually (laughs). “The sales have finally skyrocketed! I don’t have to always think about the percentages I’ve spent on FBA fees, referral fees, and whatever else. Everything is now categorized in my QuickBooks account via Synder, so I can keep track of my net income. The best thing is that I don’t have to do anything.
