How Does Afterpay Work?

Afterpay is a service that allows customers to make purchases and then pay for those purchases over time in four equal installments. Customers never pay interest on their Afterpay purchases as long as they make their payments on time. If a customer misses a payment, they may be charged a late fee of $10.

Say a vendor has added Afterpay to a Shopify store. To use Afterpay, customers simply need to select it as their payment method at checkout. They’ll then be shown their Afterpay schedule, which details when their four payments are due. Once the purchase is complete, customers make their first payment to Afterpay at the time of purchase, and the remaining three payments will be automatically deducted from their credit or debit card every two weeks.

Does Afterpay Offer Automatic Payments?

Yes – Afterpay does offer automatic payments. This means that once a customer has made their first payment, the remaining three payments will be automatically deducted from their credit or debit card every two weeks.

While this might be convenient for some customers, others might prefer to make their payments manually. If your customers fall into the latter category, they can follow the instructions below to stop their Afterpay automatic payments.

How to Stop Automatic Payments

In order to stop automatic payments with Afterpay, your customers will have to remove all the credit/debit cards they’ve linked to their Afterpay account.

To do this, they’ll need to log in to their Afterpay account and go to the ‘My Account’ tab. Next, after clicking on the ‘Billing’ icon, they’ll see an option to remove the current card. They’ll then click on this option and choose ‘Remove Card’ on the next prompt. Finally, they should choose the card they want to remove to disconnect it from their Afterpay account.

Keep in mind that users have to remove all cards associated with their Afterpay account to truly stop automatic payments. Otherwise, Afterpay will simply deduct the payment from another card linked to the account; it might also be useful to know that users can’t remove a card from their Afterpay account if they have a payment due.

Is It a Good Idea to Turn off Automatic Payments on Afterpay?

This is something for the customer to decide – some people prefer the convenience of having their payments automatically deducted from their card. On the other hand, a customer may prefer having more control over their payments, or they may even be interested in raising their Afterpay limit.

In general, however, it’s better to leave the automatic payments on, as it decreases the chances of a customer forgetting to make a payment and being charged a late fee – but it’s really up to the individual’s preference.

What Happens if You Miss a Payment on Afterpay?

Because turning automatic payments off means that users have to remember to make their payments manually, there’s always the danger of missing a payment. If a customer misses a payment, they may be charged a late fee of $10, and if they don’t make the payment within seven days of the due date, they’ll have to pay an additional $7.

In Summary

Afterpay is a service that allows customers to make purchases and then pay for those purchases in four equal installments. The only way to stop automatic Afterpay payments is to disconnect all the credit and debit cards that are linked to the account.
