You create a read-only set of API credentials in <strong>Toast Web<\/strong> (Toast&#8217;s back-office site), then paste them into Synder. Toast never gives Synder the ability to change anything in your restaurant \u2014 Standard API access is read-only by design.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This guide walks you through the whole connection in five steps. Budget about ten minutes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Before you start<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Each location you want to connect must be on <strong>Toast Restaurant Management Suite Essentials or higher<\/strong>. Locations on a lower package appear grayed out with a lock icon and cannot be selected.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Your Toast user needs the <strong>8.4 Manage Integrations<\/strong> permission at <em>every<\/em> location you want to connect. Step 1 shows how to check it.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>You need a Synder account with your accounting company (QuickBooks Online, QuickBooks Desktop, Xero, Sage Intacct or Oracle NetSuite) already connected. New to Synder? Start with <a href=\"https:\/\/synder.com\/help\/connect-quickbooks-online-to-synder\/\">connecting QuickBooks Online or Xero<\/a> or <a href=\"https:\/\/synder.com\/help\/how-to-connect-quickbooks-desktop-to-synder-connector\/\">connecting QuickBooks Desktop<\/a>, then come back here.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Synder needs only two things from Toast: a <strong>Client ID<\/strong> and a <strong>client secret<\/strong>. You create both in Steps 2\u20134. Synder then loads your locations from Toast and lets you pick the one to connect \u2014 no Restaurant GUID or other IDs to look up.<\/li>\n\n\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"step-1-check-that-you-can-manage-toast-integrations-a74e6a3c-5b97-2a1b-347c-50566def5d8f\">Step 1 \u2014 Check that you can manage Toast integrations<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Toast controls credential access through the <strong>8.4 Manage Integrations<\/strong> permission. If you already know you have it at every location, skip to Step 2.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>To check or grant it, a Toast user or restaurant operator with full access needs to:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Log in to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.toasttab.com\/restaurants\/admin\/api-access\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Toast Web<\/a>.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Go to <strong>Employees &gt; Employee management &gt; Employees<\/strong> and select the employee&#8217;s name.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Open the <strong>Jobs &amp; Permissions<\/strong> tab and scroll to the <strong>Permissions<\/strong> section.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Confirm <strong>8.4 Manage Integrations<\/strong> is enabled for <em>every<\/em> location you plan to connect.<\/li>\n\n\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p><em>Note: only a Toast user or restaurant operator who already has full-access credentials can grant this permission to someone else.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"step-2-open-toast-api-access-in-toast-web-245aa777-1c6f-bf89-09cc-1093ab835d93\">Step 2 \u2014 Open Toast API access in Toast Web<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Open the Toast API access page directly: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.toasttab.com\/restaurants\/admin\/api-access\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">toasttab.com\/restaurants\/admin\/api-access<\/a> (log in to Toast Web if prompted).<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Or navigate there from the Toast Web menu: <strong>Integrations &gt; Toast API access &gt; Manage credentials<\/strong>.<\/li>\n\n\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p>The <strong>Manage credentials<\/strong> page lists every set of API credentials in your management group. The icon next to each name tells you your access level:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>No icon<\/strong> \u2014 full access. You can view and edit.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Warning icon<\/strong> \u2014 read-only. You can view but not edit.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Lock icon<\/strong> \u2014 locked. The <strong>New Credentials<\/strong> page opens.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Enter a <strong>credential name<\/strong> you will recognize later \u2014 <strong>Synder<\/strong> is a good choice.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Under <strong>scopes<\/strong>, select every scope offered. They are all read-only, so this cannot let Synder change anything in Toast.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Select the <strong>location(s)<\/strong> you want to connect. You can pick every location in the management group or choose them individually, then click <strong>Apply<\/strong>.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Click <strong>Confirm<\/strong>.<\/li>\n\n\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p><em>You can hold up to 100 sets of Standard API credentials per management group.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>About scopes.<\/strong> A working Synder connection uses the full read-only set \u2014 14 scopes. Selecting fewer can make the sync fail; selecting all is safe. Toast&#8217;s <a href=\"https:\/\/doc.toasttab.com\/doc\/devguide\/devApiAccessScopes.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Standard API access scopes<\/a> reference explains what each one covers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Toast then emails you a confirmation listing each location the credentials cover, its Restaurant GUID and the scopes granted. You do not need anything from it to connect Synder \u2014 Synder loads the locations for you in Step 5 \u2014 but it is a handy record of which locations you included.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"step-4-copy-your-client-id-and-client-secret-f4c99b4d-f875-808e-e50d-a022225d96e0\">Step 4 \u2014 Copy your Client ID and client secret<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>After you click Confirm, Toast opens the <strong>Credentials<\/strong> page. Synder does not ask for any of them \u2014 you only need the Client ID and the client secret.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Treat the client secret like a password.<\/strong> Toast recommends storing it in a password manager and never sharing it over email or chat.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"step-5-connect-toast-in-synder-5ebed071-b0e1-79b3-075d-18d621c3cfab\">Step 5 \u2014 Connect Toast in Synder<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Log in to Synder. Click the <strong>person icon<\/strong> in the upper-right corner, open <strong>Organization settings<\/strong>, go to the <strong>Integrations<\/strong> section and click <strong>Add integration<\/strong>. (If you are still in the first-time setup wizard, pick <strong>Toast<\/strong> at the <em>Select the platforms<\/em> step instead \u2014 the same form opens.)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Choose <strong>Toast<\/strong> from the <em>&#8220;Choose an integration to connect&#8221;<\/em> dropdown. Use the reveal icon to check you pasted it correctly.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Click <strong>Load locations<\/strong>. Synder checks the credentials with Toast and lists every location they cover.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Select <strong>one<\/strong> location from the list \u2014 each Synder connection covers a single Toast location.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Click <strong>connect<\/strong> to finish.<\/li>\n\n\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p>Synder connects the location and starts importing its Toast data. From here, <a href=\"https:\/\/synder.com\/help\/how-to-set-up-automatic-synchronization\/\">turn on automatic synchronization<\/a> so new Toast sales flow into your books on their own, and <a href=\"https:\/\/synder.com\/help\/how-to-sync-historical-transactions\/\">sync historical transactions<\/a> if you want past sales in your books too.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>One connection per location.<\/strong> Connecting more than one restaurant? Repeat Step 5 with the same Client ID and client secret and pick the next location from the list.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Good to know<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Rotating the client secret breaks any integration using it.<\/strong> If you rotate the secret in Toast, update it in Synder straight away. Tokens already issued stay valid until they expire.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Deleting credentials is permanent.<\/strong> Toast cannot restore them \u2014 you would have to create a new set and reconnect.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>A grayed-out location with a lock icon<\/strong> is not on Toast Restaurant Management Suite Essentials or higher. Upgrade that location in Toast before connecting it.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Read-only or locked credentials<\/strong> mean you are missing the 8.4 Manage Integrations permission at one or more of the linked locations. Go back to Step 1.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>A location is missing from the list in Synder?<\/strong> The credentials do not cover it. In Toast Web, open the credentials, use <strong>Edit Location IDs<\/strong> to add the location, then click <strong>Load locations<\/strong> again.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Standard API access is read-only.<\/strong> Synder can read your Toast data; it cannot change orders, menus or payments in Toast.<\/li>\n\n\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Related articles<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul
