{"id":27536,"date":"2026-05-07T12:46:25","date_gmt":"2026-05-07T12:46:25","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/synder.com\/help\/?p=27536"},"modified":"2026-05-07T12:46:27","modified_gmt":"2026-05-07T12:46:27","slug":"how-to-use-waterfall-reports-in-synder-revrec","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/synder.com\/help\/how-to-use-waterfall-reports-in-synder-revrec\/","title":{"rendered":"How to use Waterfall reports in Synder RevRec"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>This guide shows how to use the <strong>Waterfall reports<\/strong> in Synder Revenue Recognition (RevRec) and \u2014 most importantly \u2014 how the date filter works, since this is the main part that tends to confuse users.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Use these reports if you:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Have Synder RevRec enabled<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Need to forecast how previously booked invoices and subscriptions will recognize across future months<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Need to track the burndown of deferred revenue over time<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Are preparing audit, board, or month-close reporting<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>These reports will not work for you if you:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Don&#8217;t have RevRec enabled (Waterfalls are part of the RevRec module \u2014 Large plan and above, or as an add-on)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Are looking for a transaction-level posting view \u2014 use the <a href=\"https:\/\/synder.com\/help\/debits-credits-report-revrec-what-it-is-why-it-matters-and-how-to-use-it\/\">Debits &amp; Credits Report<\/a> for that<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Need a balance-at-a-point-in-time check \u2014 use the <a href=\"https:\/\/synder.com\/help\/synder-revrec-deferred-revenue-reconciliation-report\/\">Deferred Revenue Reconciliation Report<\/a> instead<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The two Waterfall reports<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Synder offers two Waterfalls in <strong>Revenue Recognition \u2192 Reports<\/strong>:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Waterfall by Month<\/strong> \u2014 one consolidated recognition curve for the whole organization. In other words, once you set a start date, older recognition is excluded.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>At the same time, the report can still show subscriptions and recognition schedules that continue <strong>beyond<\/strong> your selected end date. This is why users sometimes choose a window such as <strong>Jan 2025 \u2192 Dec 2025<\/strong> and still see later subscriptions or an <strong>As of<\/strong> label beyond that range.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">What does that mean in practice<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>The start date removes earlier history.<\/strong> Revenue recognized before that point is cut out of the Waterfall.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>The end date does not behave like a hard row filter.<\/strong> Subscriptions can still appear if their schedules continue past the selected window.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>This is expected behavior for this report.<\/strong> The Waterfall is meant to show how recognition unfolds over time, not just a flat slice of subscriptions that started inside the visible range.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">If you need a cleaner period-specific view<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Use <strong>Waterfall by Subscription<\/strong> and sort \/ review subscriptions manually.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Download the CSV and filter it further in Excel or Google Sheets.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>If you need a strict balance-at-a-date validation, use the <a href=\"https:\/\/synder.com\/help\/synder-revrec-deferred-revenue-reconciliation-report\/\">Deferred Revenue Reconciliation Report<\/a>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">How to read the report<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Subscription \/ Contract<\/strong> (Subscription view only) \u2014 the source document from which the recognition schedule comes from.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Booked amount<\/strong> \u2014 the total value associated with that subscription&#8217;s or month&#8217;s recognition schedule in the Waterfall.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Monthly columns<\/strong> \u2014 the amount recognized in each month.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Totals<\/strong> \u2014 let you compare how much revenue is being recognized across periods.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>As of<\/strong> section \u2014 helps explain what remains deferred beyond the currently recognized portion.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Examples of usage<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">1. Forecasting next-quarter revenue<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Run <strong>Waterfall by Month<\/strong> for the next quarter to see how existing schedules will recognize over those months. This is useful for forecasting and board reporting.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">2. Investigating a spike in recognized revenue<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>If one month looks unusually high, open <strong>Waterfall by Subscription<\/strong> and review which subscriptions are contributing the largest values in that month.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">3. Explaining why later subscriptions still appear<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>If a customer asks why 2026 subscriptions still show up in a 2025-focused report, the answer is that the Waterfall keeps the recognition schedule tail and is not limited to showing only subscriptions that got booked and recognized in the visible end date.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">4. Reviewing deferred revenue movement over time<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Use the Waterfall to see how already-booked subscriptions unwind into recognized revenue month by month and what remains deferred after the visible recognized portion.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Common questions<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Why are subscriptions from outside my date range showing up?<\/strong><br>Because the Waterfall is not a simple row filter by subscription start date. The report cuts off earlier recognition before the selected <strong>start date<\/strong>, but later schedules can still appear beyond the selected end date.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Why does the report show an \u201cAs of\u201d date later than my filter end date?<\/strong><br>Because the report is still reflecting the remaining recognition schedule \/ deferred tail beyond the visible window, rather than stopping strictly at the last month in your selected range.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Why do I see negative values in some months?<\/strong><br>Refunds, credit memos, or canceled subscriptions can reverse previously recognized revenue. Use <strong>Waterfall by Subscription<\/strong> to identify which subscription is driving the negative amount.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>My report is empty or incomplete for a large date range.<\/strong><br>Use <strong>Download<\/strong> instead of only relying on the in-app view.
