Instead, it determines the tax rate based on information received from the payment processor.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The process works as follows:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>The payment platform sends Synder:\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Transaction total<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Tax amount<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Synder calculates the <strong>tax rate (%)<\/strong> from this data.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Synder attempts to <strong>match the calculated rate<\/strong> with a tax code in your accounting system.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p>Sales tax synchronization differs for <strong>US-based<\/strong> and <strong>Non-US<\/strong> QuickBooks companies.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"sales-tax-settings-for-usbased-quickbooks-companies-1c58fe4f-466a-4588-956f-296e46f27edc\"><strong>Sales Tax Settings for US-Based QuickBooks Companies<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Companies using the <strong>QuickBooks Online US edition<\/strong> rely on <strong>Automated Sales Tax (AST)<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Automated Sales Tax (AST)<\/strong> calculates tax automatically based on:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Customer location<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Company address<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Tax jurisdiction rules<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Because of this, Synder <strong>does not apply tax percentages directly<\/strong>. Synder records them directly in the accounting platform.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"tax-behavior-904a07ee-a068-4ca9-839f-91d7e309bfd3\"><strong>Tax Behavior<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Synder automatically detects whether the transaction is <strong>Tax Inclusive<\/strong> or <strong>Tax Exclusive<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>This is determined <strong>based on the original transaction<\/strong>, not configured in Synder<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"configuring-tax-settings-in-synder-5bf9371b-667a-4f58-8806-1f9c80a295d8\"><strong>Configuring Tax Settings in Synder<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>To access tax configuration, <strong>enable Apply Taxes<\/strong> in settings. This setting prevents <strong>synchronization failures caused by missing tax rates<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"zerorated-tax-code-9b63ca53-90cc-46d0-831d-436fd1687558\"><strong>Zero-Rated Tax Code<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Synder applies the <strong>Zero-rated tax code<\/strong> when the tax amount from the payment processor equals <strong>$0<\/strong>. This approach records transactions with the correct tax classification, such as Exempt or Non-taxable.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"generic-tax-code-aaa95b26-0463-40be-a1eb-9268a7bf2400\"><strong>Generic Tax Code<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>The <strong>Generic tax code<\/strong> allows you to apply a specified tax code to all transactions based on certain conditions.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This option can be used in three ways:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Apply Generic Tax if a Transaction Contains Taxes<\/strong><strong><br><\/strong>If configured, Synder will ignore the tax rate from the payment processor and replace it with the selected <strong>generic tax code<\/strong>.<br>This is useful when correcting <strong>incorrect tax calculations from the payment platform<\/strong>.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Apply Generic Tax if the Transaction Does Not Contain Taxes<\/strong><strong><br><\/strong>If enabled, Synder will apply a tax code <strong>only to transactions that do not include tax<\/strong>.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Apply Generic Tax to Shipping amount if the Transaction Contains Shipping<\/strong><strong><br><\/strong>This option applies a specific tax code to <strong>shipping amounts<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"expense-tax-settings-5674e079-af1b-4817-86dd-4f1787e024e3\"><strong>Expense Tax Settings<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Some jurisdictions require businesses to <strong>pay tax on payment processor fees<\/strong>. Synder allows you to apply taxes to <strong>transaction fees recorded as expenses<\/strong>. The default, Xero-rated and Generic tax code settings are available for Expense tax settings as well.<br><br>For step-by-step instructions on how to configure taxes on fees, refer to <a href=\"https:\/\/synder.com\/help\/apply-tax-on-fees-or-expenses\/\">this guide<\/a>.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"important-notes-8754c0e6-6bab-4e6e-a6ad-65cb61874c14\"><strong>Important Notes<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Synder cannot match tax codes by <strong>jurisdiction name<\/strong> when the <strong>tax percentage is identical across multiple jurisdictions<\/strong>.<br>If a transaction includes <strong>4% tax<\/strong> and you have 4% tax across several jurisdictions, Synder applies the <strong>first tax code alphabetically<\/strong>.<br><br>Use Smart Rules to override the alphabetical logic.<br><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>To override the alphabetical logic, you can use Smart Rules and assign the specific tax codes based on the shipping address\/region.<br>Check <a href=\"https:\/\/synder.com\/help\/apply-sales-taxes-based-on-location-canada\/\">this guide<\/a> for more details about applying taxes based on location via Smart Rules.<br><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Smart Rules apply <strong>one specific tax code per condition<\/strong>. If you have different tax codes for each region and the same tax rates across multiple jurisdictions, incorrect tax assignments may occur in some cases.<br>For complex tax configurations, contact the support team to evaluate a custom approach.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Synder cannot dynamically create tax codes based on city, country or district. All tax codes must <strong>already exist in the accounting platform<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"faq-ef25593b-608c-4101-a15a-87ba47c60157\"><strong>FAQ<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Where do the tax codes in Synder settings come from?<\/strong><strong><br><\/strong><em>The tax codes available in Synder are pulled directly from your accounting platform.<\/em><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><em>If the required tax code is missing, you need to create it first in QuickBooks before selecting it in Synder. <\/em><em><br><\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Do the changes to the tax settings apply to historical transactions?<\/strong><br><em>No. The setting only affects <\/em><strong><em>transactions synced after the adjustment<\/em><\/strong><em>.
